Roger Alejandro Martinez honed his compositional craft through years of music theory training, performing, and recording. With his ensemble the New Heaven & the New Earth, he toured North America several times, and released numerous records. In 2014, Martinez co-founded the film music company Martinez & Russ Music.
" 'Overlook Mountain Suite' is a four-movement chamber work arranged for violin, banjo, steel string acoustic guitar, and double bass. The piece is named after Overlook Mountain in Woodstock, New York. While the piece is not intended to be programmatic in any concrete way, the four movements do to a certain extent mimic the trajectory of scaling and descending a mountain, whether physical, psychological or emotional. I began writing “Overlook Mountain Suite,” as my primary musical project had, at least temporarily, come to a standstill. Much of the tension of this piece comes from a struggle to transcend stagnation, and a hope for greater possibility ahead. In a sense, the act of creation is its own victory, and almost always worth the process, however daunting it may seem at times. I am endlessly grateful to The Happy Maladies for bringing this piece so dynamically and vibrantly to life." - RAM
